Chemicals in Brazil Emerging Technologies Analysis¶

Emerging Technologies¶

The Brazilian chemical industry, while facing significant challenges related to costs, imports, and infrastructure, is also at the cusp of incorporating several emerging technologies that have the potential to significantly impact its value chain. Based on recent information from 2024 and 2025, the key emerging technologies influencing the sector include:

1. Industry 4.0 Technologies: This broad category encompasses a suite of digital advancements aimed at increasing automation, connectivity, and data utilization in industrial processes. In the Brazilian chemical industry, the focus is on implementing technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Digital Twins, Automation, and Robotics. These technologies are seen as crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, improving safety standards, optimizing production planning, and streamlining logistics and supply chain management. [1, 8, 10, 17, 18, 21, 24, 25, 37, 38, 40] AI, for instance, is being explored for demand forecasting, inventory management, quality control, and process optimization, including catalyst usage. [17, 26, 40] IoT sensors enable real-time monitoring of equipment and processes, supporting predictive maintenance and operational efficiency. [1, 25, 38] Automation and robotics are being adopted to minimize risks in hazardous environments and increase precision in operations. [1, 17, 18, 37]

2. Green Chemistry and Circular Economy Technologies: Driven by increasing global and local demand for sustainability and a focus on reducing environmental impact, technologies related to green chemistry, the circular economy, and bio-based materials are gaining prominence. This includes the development and adoption of processes that utilize renewable raw materials, reduce waste generation, promote recycling and reuse of materials, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. [1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 15, 22, 23, 27, 28, 31, 36, 42] Specifically, there is a growing interest in bio-based chemicals and polymers derived from Brazil's agricultural resources like sugarcane and vegetable oils. [4, 10, 15] Advanced recycling (also known as chemical recycling) is an emerging technology that aims to transform plastic waste into new raw materials for chemical production, complementing traditional mechanical recycling. [23, 27, 31, 36, 42] Government initiatives like the Selo Verde Brasil program are also supporting the certification of sustainable chemical products and processes. [4, 15]

3. Advanced Manufacturing: This involves the application of innovative technologies to modernize manufacturing processes, improve productivity, and enhance product quality. For the Brazilian chemical industry, advanced manufacturing principles are being integrated through automation, digital technologies, and potentially new production techniques. [24, 39, 43, 44, 45] The aim is to move towards "smart factories" that are more efficient, flexible, and less susceptible to disruptions. [24]

4. Biotechnology: Industrial biotechnology, particularly as applied to the production of bio-based chemicals and inputs, is an emerging field with significant potential in Brazil. Leveraging the country's strong bio-resource base, biotechnology can contribute to developing sustainable alternatives to fossil-based chemicals and improving agricultural inputs like bioinsumos, which are seeing increasing adoption. [6, 7, 10, 22, 28] Events and discussions around industrial biotechnology are active in Brazil, highlighting its growing importance. [6, 7, 22]
