Isabella County History

The early history of Loomis dates back to about 1871 and 1872, when the first saw mill began it's operation here. It was located on the present site now known as the George W. Smith mill. It was owned then by a company know as Sage & McGrew, with Mr. Sage as superintendent, from whom the Sage township took it's name. About 1884, the mill was sold to J. H. Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs operated the mill about six years until he sold it to a McMullen of Grand Rapids. McMullen never ran the mill. He sold the mill machinery to a concern in Cadillac, and the mill building was torn down about 1895. Pioneer Days As far as we can ascertain from the early settlers, J. E. Cole was the first to build a home in this community about the year 1870. His log cabin was located about one fourth mile west of what is now know as Loomis. Andrew J. Rodgers came here in the same year, and began taking up his homestead. Charles Preston, Henry Smith, and Charles H. Forbes, Sr. were the next settlers.

It seems these pioneers had a little more than their share of hardships that befell their lot. One man in particular tells a pitiful story of how he came here, a lad of ten years with his foster-mother, Mrs. Thomas Smith, his foster father Thomas Smith, had gone back to Ohio to work to send them money on which to live. Mrs. Smith became ill and passed away, leaving the little lad to care for himself and his three-year old sister. The boy managed to get word to his father, who came to his rescue. Mr. Smith came home and kept house himself, for a good many years. Mrs. Smith was buried on the farm with other members of the family. There are still several families of Smith's here at the present time.

George W. Smith, who has lived in or near Loomis for the past 65 years tells us of some of the first happenings around Loomis. About the year 1871, Mr. Smith relates that he worked for the Salt and Lumber Co., who were doing business in East Saginaw, helping to build the railroad through Loomis. He said they were then known as the Flint and Pere Marquette Co. (Now known as the Pere Marquette Railway Co.) The timber was very dense, as there had never been any lumbering operations carried on here before this time. It took them some time to clear this right-of-way. They paid one dollar and fifty cents per day for a ten-hour day for the men who had to furnish their own board. Mr. Smith also states that he helped in the construction of the Loomis Depot in 1871. This old depot served the community until August 17, 1932, when it burned to the ground, the origin of the fire being unknown. In 1933, the Pere Marquette Railway Co. bought what was formerly the Post-Office building, and converted it into a depot. This depot has been well kept up, with Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Leonard acting as station agents for the past eight years.

During the lumbering days, Loomis was quite a busy little town, it had a population of approximately six hundred. It boasted of two hotels, two general stores, two churches, one school, two saw mills, two blacksmith shops, two hardware stores, one doctor, one drug store, one grist mill, one planning mill, one millinery store, one photographer's gallery, three saloons and the depot. The first hotel was called the Commercial House, and was owned by C. E. Thompson. Later this hotel was sold to James McDonald. He then sold it to G. W. Miller. Some years later F. C. Calkins bought it. The building caught fire and burned. Mr. Calkins later built a smaller hotel, and a year later, Frank M. Stone opened a hotel. Edward Delzell built the first general store on the south side of the street in 1872. Soon after this store opened O. H. Ingram of Eau Claire, Wisconsin erected a general store on the north side of the street. In 1898, C. D. Johnson of Escanaba rented the store. He sold the store to his brother F. L. Johnson. In 1911, F. L. Johnson built the building known as the Johnson Hardware. The other hardware store was owned by John C. Smith and located west of the post office. James O. Shaver owned and operated a blacksmith shop where he did general blacksmithing. About this same time, William Ostrander opened up a shop and did a thriving business. This old building stands on the corner of Loomis' main street. It is owned by Henry Johnson.

Loomis Isabella County

In 1874 the first school house was built and was known as the Wise Township School, District No. 1. It was used until about 1900, when it was sold to A. L. Fuller, who tore it down. A new building was erected on the same site, it also being known as the Wise Township School, District No. 1. The Loomis Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1882, and the first minister was Rev. Mr. Cook. It is still being used. The Mennonite church was built about 1888, and Rev. A. B. Burkholder was it's pastor. It was torn down in 1926. The lumber was taken to Clare and used in the erection of a Mennonite Church there. The first doctor in Loomis was Dr. Dilly. Soon after his arrival he also opened a drug store. A Mr. William S. Jackson also operated a drug store, about 1876. In 1888 the F. & P. M. Co. erected a large water tank at the west end of the village, as Loomis was at that time a regular watering place. In 1931 the tank was sold and moved to Manistee by the company. The photographer's gallery was owned by Charles A. Cady.

Loomis at the present time is a nice quiet little town, having two grocery stores owned by Walter G. Denton and Charles H. Leonard, one hardware and general store, and Post Office owned by Fred Johnson. It also has a saw mill owned by George W. Smith, one garage owned by Frank Breese, one school, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and a Depot.

The first post master was Myron F. Brown, appointed in 1872. He ran the post office in the depot. In 1873, G. W. Howe was appointed post master. Next came J. G. Saxton, who held the office until 1879. Then J. N. McDonald was appointed. In 1885, O. H. Ingram, owner of the Ingram store was appointed post master and the post office was moved to the store. Following Mr. Ingram was A. L. Fuller, who also kept the post office in the store. In 1893, C. A. Cady was appointed post master, and the post office was moved to his photography shop. Four years later Fred Johnson, then a clerk in his brother's store, was appointed, and it was again moved back to the store. In 1901, the post office was moved from the store to a building of its own and F. L. Johnson took it over. He continued as post master until 1914, when George W. Smith, was appointed and the post office was moved to what is now known as the Denton building. In 1922, Fred L. Johnson was reappointed to the office and still holds it, and the office is located in his general store.

In 1929 the Loomis Womens' Progressive Club was organized, which helped very much in the upbuilding of our town. The first officer were Mrs. F. L. Johnson, Pres., Mrs. Ed. Methner, Vice Pres., and Mrs. John S. Smith, Sec., and Tres. They have sponsored many entertainments such as, plays, ice cream socials, dances and bake sales. With money earned they installed the first electric lights in the church, and also helped to build the basement under the church.

At one time there was a pickle factory in Loomis which gave employment to several men, it was built about 1910 by a Mr. Walker. It was later sold to the Freestone Pickle Co. of Bangor. It was operated by them for about twenty years, when it was torn down.
